Discover Your True Self at Baekyangsa Templestay
Baekyangsa Temple, established during the reign of King Mu of Baekje (632 C.E.) by Ven. Yeohwan, was originally known as Baekamsa Temple. From the Goryeo Dynasty onward, it was called Jeongtosa. In the late 19th century, it was finally renamed Baekyangsa, or the White Sheep Temple, inspired by a local legend. According to the story, a white sheep would descend from the mountains to listen to the monks' chants and Dharma talks. After a time, the sheep ceased to appear, prompting the monks to wonder about its absence. One night, the sheep appeared in a monk's dream and explained that it had been reborn in one of the Buddhist heavens due to the monks' teachings and prayers.
Baekyangsa is renowned as a sacred Seon (Zen) practice temple—a revered training ground that has nurtured many great Seon Masters toward enlightenment. The Unmun Seon Room, located at Unmunam Hermitage on the mountain, has been a key practice hall for accomplished monks, especially in the southern region below the Han River. So highly respected is the Unmun Seon Room that any serious Seon practitioner aspires to spend at least one season there in dedicated practice. Today, Baekyangsa hosts a Seon Room, Sutra School, and Precepts School, earning it the distinction of "Gobul Chongnim" (Ancient Buddha Temple). It is considered the cradle of modern Korean Buddhist Seon—a living sanctuary where the ancient practice of meditation continues to guide seekers toward awakening.
Upon passing through the Iljoomun (One Pillar Gate) and walking the winding path up to the temple, you are enveloped in the majestic beauty of the surrounding forest. Ancient trees release a fragrant aroma, and behind the temple, a colony of approximately 5,000 Nutmeg Trees creates a stunning natural haven. Baekyangsa is entirely surrounded by nature, offering breathtaking views year-round. In particular, the vibrant crimson Baby Japanese Maple Trees, resembling tiny hands or bracken ferns, create a captivating scene.
If you continue to climb Baekamsan toward the Unmun Seon Room, after about 20 minutes you will arrive at Yaksaam Hermitage. From here, you can take in a panoramic view of Baekyangsa and the surrounding landscape. During autumn, the mountain is ablaze with crimson foliage, yet Baekyangsa remains serenely timeless. You can spend hours there, captivated by the tranquil beauty.
