Jeondeungsa Temple: A Journey Through History
Jeondeungsa Temple, the oldest temple in this historic region, is located on Ganghwa Island
which has been a historically significant place, from the birth of the Korean people.
Jeondeungsa was founded by Venerable monk Ahdo in 381 CE. At that time its name was Jinjongsa.
Since the queen Jeonghwa from Goryeo Dynasty donated printed Buddhist scriptures and jade lanterns,
the temple was renamed to Jeondeungsa which means "A temple that transmits Buddha's teachings".
Jeondeungsa is rich with myths and legends,
such as the Sarang Fortress said to have been built by three sons of Dangun, legendary founder of Korea,
the naked woman carving on the eaves of the Daeungbojeon, and a ginkgo tree that never bears fruit.
The temple has also been a fundamental place for national defense,
as evidenced by its connection to history through the temporary palace site,
the Jeongjoksa Archive where the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty were stored,
and remnants of the French campaign against Korea in 1866.
Jeondeungsa is also home to numerous cultural treasures,
including the Daeungbojeon (Main Buddha Hall), Yaksajeon (Medicine Buddha Hall), and a giant temple bell.
