Guide to Samwhasa Temple

Guide to Samwhasa Temple
Samwhasa, located in Donghae-si, Gangwon-do, is a branch temple of Woljeongsa, head temple of the 4th religious district of the Jogye Order. It was founded by Jajang, Master of Precepts, in 642 during the reign of Queen Seondeok of Silla Dynasty.

Originally it was named ‘Heukyundae’, meaning a black lotus platform. In 864 its name was changed to ‘Samgongam’ by Beom-il, a great national teacher of Silla. It also became a temple for King Wanggun, the founder of Goryeo Dynasty to pray for the repose of the spirits who fell victims during the war among the three countries for unification.

King Wanggun changed the temple’s name to Samwhasa, to harmonize the people divided during the unification war. From then on Samwhasa has been renowned for its ‘Gukhaeng Suryukdaejae’, from Chosun Dynasty up to date. Gukkhaneng refers to a state-sponsored event, and Suryukdaejae means water and land ceremony.

Nowadays, Surukjae is held annually as a traditional buddhist event that embraces the spirit of equality of all beings and expresses respect for life. Suryukjae is a memorial ceremony to placate vengeful spirits including hungry ghosts wandering on land and in water.

Currently the temple has the appearance of an old traditional temple with 1300-year history. It has kept treasures such as a stone pagoda of three stories (National Treasure No.1277), and a sitting figure of Rocana Buddha made of iron (government-designated cultural asset No.1292). There are many old buddhist books too.

You can feel powerful energy here in the beautiful and spectacular Mt. Duta, and enjoy picturesque scents in a fairyland of Mureung-vally named as No.1 national sightseeing resort, and on the Chotae Bawi(Candlestick Rock) you can experience a miraculous sunrise from the blue East Sea. Samwhasa has been running templestay since 2005 when it was designated as a templestay temple. Since then, it has offered a space for relaxing and healing retreat for many visitors.

1) Daily templestay (for 4 hours 20 minutes)

Name of Program: ”Strolling around Samwhasa”
Arriving at Mt. Duta, you are welcomed by the one-pillar gate of our temple. From there you will bear the meaning of the gate in your mind and climb the platform rock of Mureung-banseok, where you can calm down yourself with a short sitting meditation.

You can let go of worldly desires during strolling along the temple precincts and the fairyland of Mureung-gyegok as long as four hours. Then you may feel a part of Mt. Duta and find yourself happier.

We have two programs for you. The first one is to experience making Jiwha (paper flower) with Hanji (Korean traditional paper). Make sure that you are the one who blossoms your own flowers in your mind. Jiwha is usually used in the decoration of the Suryukdaejae, and by making Jiwha you come to learn the meaning of it. Every year Suryukjae is held for three days from the third Friday through Sunday in October.

The second program is forest walking in Mt. Duta. Starting from Samwhasa, you stroll without talking with others along the lane of Hakso-dae, Ssang-pokpo, Yongchu-pokpo with all your mind concentrating on the sound of wind, birds and flowing water of a brook. It may lead you to a state of selflessness in the mother nature.

3) Templestayn Program (one night two days)
* Program title : Oyujijok(tentatively named : I am satisfied now.)
* The pride of Samwhasa temple, Suryukdaejae (Intangible Cultural Property No. 125)
Jihwa refers to making flowers with Hanji, the Korean traditional paper which is dyed with pigments from nature. While the natural flowers wither easily, Jihwa made from Hanji is said to last 1000 years. we can make many Jiwha flowers such as chrysanthemums, hydrangea, peony and etc. We can make larger and gorgeous Jiwha flowers.
(How to make Jiwha)
Starting from selecting of Hanji, pick the leaves or berries as the raw material of natural colors, boil each material in a caldron, and dye it with the water from the boiled materials. Then cut out each petal from the petal shaped-metal frame by striking it with a chisel. You can make a piece of flower by cutting a bamboo to be slender, coiling it with blue cloth, and gluing the petals together on it. The process of a participant is gluing the flower petals on the prepared bamboo stalk. It takes about an hour to make one, and generally requires a delicate touch rather than making lotus flowers with a paper cup.
We hold Gukhaeng Suryukdaejae, the pride of Samwhasa temple solemnly for three days from every third Friday through Sunday of October. Suryukjae is a typical Buddhist transfer ceremony that leads spirits and starving ghosts wandering in land and water to the paradise, Geukrak. While Yongsanjae or Yesujae as a Buddhistic transfer ceremony is for a specific person, Suryukjae is a highly social and cultural event for the entire community in regard of including an unspecified number of the general public like a forlorn wandering spirit.
