팔공산八公山 도림사道林寺는 대한불교 조계종 제12교구 본사 해인사의 말사로서 대구지역의 포교를 목적으로 세워진 대표적인 힐링(healing) 사찰이다.
도림사는 도심지에 인접한 산지가람이면서 사명寺名에서 알 수 있듯 대한불교 조계종 종정 도림道林 법전法傳스님께서 창건하신 근본도량이기도 하다.
도림사가 위치한 지형은 대구의 진산鎭山인 팔공산 동남쪽 감투봉 아래 위치하며 맞은편으로 갓바위 약사여래부처님과 동화사, 파계사 등이 줄지어 서있는 팔공산맥을 마주하고 있다. 환성사가 있는 환성산 뒷산을 안산案山으로 하고 대구시민의 젖줄인 팔공댐 물줄기의 발원지이기도 하다.
이 절은 1997(2541)년 2월 3일 대구시 동구 진인동 팔공산 감투봉 아래 선종가람 서광사瑞光寺로 대한불교조계종에 등록 하였으며 2004년(2548년) 12월 15일 창건주인 도림 법전스님의 호를 사명으로 개칭하여 도림사道林寺로 불리게 되었다.
도림사는 1997년 절의 맨 윗편에 경주 석굴암을 축소하여 만든 석굴암을 건립하고 2006년 6만여평 규모의 대지위에 법당을 비롯하여 천평 규모의 전통양식 현대건물인 추모공원 극락전極樂殿을 건립하고, 332평 규모의 정통양식으로 2층 건물인 사운당四雲堂을 지어 종무행정을 보게 하였으며 뒤이어 전통건물인 80평 규모의 선원과 요사체 를 지어 스님과 불자들이 언제든지 참선정진 할 수 있는 기틀을 마련하였다. 이어 100평 규모의 무심당無心堂을 지어 대한불교 조계종 종정을 지낸 도림당 법전대종사가 주석하였으며 지금은 회주 회암 선각스님이 주석하고 있다.
2010년 회암 선각 스님이 도림사 회주로 부임하면서 가람을 일신하여 대웅보전, 화엄전, 관음전, 천불루, 지장전, 육화전, 소원불대탑을 완공하고 현재 무량수전과 종합수련관, 조사전은 불사가 진행중에 있어 끊어졌던 향운香雲이 다시 살아나게 되었다.
2015년 회주인 회암 선각스님과 종무원들은 대구시민의 휴식과 힐링공간으로 도림사가 팔공산하 정족봉에 우뚝 설수 있도록 다양한 시도를 하고 있다. 신도법회와 각종 기념일 법회를 신설하고 언제든지 신도들과 추모관의 가족들이 수행하며 기도할 수 있도록 치유의 공간을 만들어 지친마음을 쉬고 갈수 있는 휴식처로 대구지역의 새로운 랜드마크가 될것이다.
이로서 도림사는 전통과 현대, 출가와 재가, 산중문화와 도시문화가 조화롭게 어우러지는 사찰로 거듭나게 되었다.
도림사에서 바라보는 저녁노을과 갓바위 부처님의 은은한 불빛은 어두웠던 우리네 마음을 훤히 밝혀줄 것이다.
The Founding Story of Dorimsa Temple
Dorimsa Temple stands today as the result of the coming together of great vows, sincere faith, and dedicated effort. Its spiritual origins trace back to Venerable Beopjeon Sunim, who later served twice as the Supreme Patriarch of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. During his years of intensive practice in the Palgongsan Mountains, alongside the renowned Zen Master Seongcheol Sunim at Seongjeonam Hermitage of Pagyesa Temple, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to meditation and spiritual cultivation.
According to temple tradition, while practicing near the sacred Gatbawi Buddha, Venerable Beopjeon Sunim saw a radiant light shining from a place deep in the valley below. Deeply moved by the experience, he felt a profound karmic connection with that location. Following the light, he later descended the mountain and discovered the site where Dorimsa Temple now stands.
For generations, the area had been known as a place blessed with pure energy, natural harmony, and ideal conditions for spiritual practice. Surrounded by the beauty of Palgongsan Mountain, bamboo groves, and clear mountain streams, it was regarded as an auspicious place for cultivating wisdom and inner peace.
The realization of this vision became possible through the faith of a devoted lay Buddhist, Mrs. Ahn Young-Ju. Having witnessed Venerable Beopjeon Sunim’s deep dedication to prayer and practice, she was profoundly inspired by his sincerity and unwavering commitment to the Dharma. Out of heartfelt devotion, she generously offered the land that would become the foundation of Dorimsa Temple.
Yet the temple we see today was built through the tireless efforts of another important figure. Venerable Yeongsang Sunim, the current Senior Monk Hoeju of Dorimsa Temple and a close disciple who served Venerable Beopjeon Sunim, dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the temple’s construction and development. With deep respect for his teacher’s vision and with unwavering determination, Venerable Yeongsang Sunim led the Buddhist construction projects and nurtured the temple community with great care and devotion. Through his years of effort, the donated land was transformed into the peaceful temple sanctuary that visitors experience today.
For the Dorimsa community, the temple represents the harmonious union of three precious elements: The great vow of Venerable Beopjeon Sunim,
the sincere faith of Mrs. Ahn Young-Ju, and the devoted efforts of Venerable Yeongsang Sunim. Together, they created a place where future generations could practice, reflect, and awaken.
Today, Dorimsa continues to embody the teaching that Venerable Beopjeon Sunim emphasized throughout his life: “Advance continuously in practice and awakening.”
This spirit remains alive in the temple’s guiding theme: “Always Awake, Always Present.”
May all who visit Dorimsa discover within themselves the same light that inspired its founding and continues to illuminate the path of awakening today.
